Data on the relationship between genome size and phenotypic traits of animals and plants are reviewed. Different concepts explaining accumulation of redundant (noncoding) DNA in genomes of eukaryotes are discussed: regulatory (repressory), neutralistic (permissive), skeletal, bodyguard, and buffering, respectively.
