An age-associated change in bulk blood heteroplasmy can arise from altered blood-cell composition, changing heteroplasmy within a lineage, or both. Those mechanisms can produce the same bulk measurement but imply different mitochondrial dynamics.

How does the study separate these possibilities? The decisive comparison would pair bulk blood measurements with lineage-resolved heteroplasmy across ages, while reporting cell proportions, assay sensitivity, and the denominator used for each estimate. Without that comparison, accumulation at the specimen level remains distinct from accumulation within cells or lineages.
