For a repurposing graph using ventricular-tachycardia imaging phenotypes, audit the chain imaging feature → substrate → disease → drug target. A shared publication or ontology ancestor can make the substrate–disease edge and the evaluation label dependent. PMID 42489881 is a candidate source to inspect, but its title alone does not establish either mechanism or source independence. Which edges are directly supported, and were any of those sources also used to construct the benchmark?

Source independence cannot be assessed from the candidate imaging review alone. The retrieval set should include every source used to support each graph edge, plus the papers or records used to define benchmark labels, with citation chaining to detect shared derivation. Were edge sources selected under a protocol fixed before benchmark construction, or retrieved after the labels were known? The latter may improve convenience without improving evidential independence or recall.

The retrieval audit should also record how each imaging phenotype was produced. PMID 42489881 distinguishes substrate location, depth, composition, and spatial distribution, but those labels can still depend on modality, acquisition sequence, reconstruction, thresholding, registration, and reader annotation. Source independence would not resolve a benchmark built from the same phenotype extraction pipeline. Were benchmark labels regenerated under an independent acquisition and annotation protocol, or only traced to different publications?

The discussion doesn't establish whether labels were regenerated independently. For your pipeline question, I’d first link each retrieved report to its underlying study and imaging dataset. [Institute of Medicine review standards](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK209517/?report=printable) recommend linking publications from the same study to avoid counting its data repeatedly. Applied here, that linkage would help distinguish separate publications reusing one image collection from separate collections using a common pipeline, so the provenance audit can identify which dependency actually needs checking.

I would not classify label revelation as an intercurrent event. It occurs in the evaluation process, not after treatment initiation in trial participants. The closer trial-method analogy is a post hoc change to the estimand or analysis: once benchmark labels inform edge selection, the reported effect no longer targets performance of a prespecified, label-blind graph. It targets performance of a benchmark-conditioned construction procedure. Estimand guidance similarly asks whether an analysis was prespecified, added while blinded, or performed post hoc because that timing changes interpretation. Was the graph-construction rule, including edge screening and prioritization, locked before label access?

The remaining audit point is whether the dated protocol fixed eligibility criteria, screening and prioritization rules, and the complete edge set before label access; otherwise the graph should be reported as benchmark-conditioned, consistent with ICH E9(R1)'s distinction among prespecified, blinded, and post hoc analyses.

It defines a different evaluation estimand: performance of a label-informed evidence-construction process, rather than performance of the prospective graph-building procedure. Label revelation is not an intercurrent event in the ICH E9(R1) sense, but the same discipline applies: specify the event, the strategy for handling it, and the effect being estimated before analysis. Were retrieval timing and label access recorded for each edge?

A broad search completed before label access can still yield a label-informed graph if edge sources were screened, prioritized, or linked after benchmark labels were revealed. For PMID 42489881, the review can define candidate phenotype dimensions, but it cannot establish independence of the benchmark pipeline. Was the full edge set fixed under a documented, label-blind screening protocol, or only the search results frozen before labels were known?

Retrieval timing does not resolve imaging dependence if graph edges and benchmark labels inherit the same acquisition or annotation pipeline. I would separate three records: scanner and sequence provenance, image feature annotation with reader blinding and agreement, and benchmark label generation. Independence would be stronger if labels came from a separate cohort or site, or from readers blinded to the edge sources using a locked protocol. PMID 42489881 frames ventricular tachycardia substrates as heterogeneous imaging phenotypes, but its review status does not establish that independence. Were these three provenance layers recorded separately?
