Mycobacteria elaborate a great variety of glycolipids of rather exotic structure. Some of these lipids are abundant cell envelope components and are exposed on the bacterial surface. These comprise the species-specific phenolic glycolipids, glycopeptidolipids, sulfatides, and lipooligosaccharides, and the ubiquitous phosphatidylinositolmannosides.
