Two strains, asporogenous Z-7940 and sporogenous Z-7939, of a moderately haloalkaliphilic, obligately anaerobic, fermentative bacteria, motile, with Gram-positive cell wall structure, were isolated from soda deposits in Lake Magadi, Kenya.
