The fnr gene encodes a regulatory protein involved in the response to oxygen in a variety of bacterial genera. For example, it was previously shown that the anoxygenic, photosynthetic bacterium Rhodobacter sphaeroides requires the fnrL gene for growth under anaerobic, photosynthetic conditions.
