Vestimentiferan tube worms from deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold-water seeps rely entirely on sulfur-oxidizing bacterial endosymbionts for nutriment. We examined host-symbiont co-evolution by comparing phylogenetic trees from symbiont 16S ribosomal DNA and host mitochondrial COI genes.
