Abstract excerpt
Environmental and/or genetic stresses may cause a breakdown in developmental homeostasis, resulting in increased bilateral asymmetry of morphological traits. The degree of these deviations (termed "fluctuating asymmetry") is thought to correlate with the severity of the stress.
