Complementary DNA clones representing two alleles of the self-incompatibility (S) locus of apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) have been isolated and characterised. One of the alleles corresponds to a 29 kDa ribonuclease (S-RNase) that was purified from pistil tissue.
