Abstract excerpt

The ratio of S, R and M variants was studied in 20 strains of six saprophytic mycobacterial species. The process of splitting of mycobacteria into variants by the shape of colonies was found to be different not only among species but also among strains of the same species. Such a heterogeneity of mycobacterial populations should be taken into account while working with these microorganisms.
