The possible role of the chemotaxis system in regulating cell division of Escherichia coli was studied. Attractants increased the rate of division whereas repellents reduced it. Non-metabolisable attractants analogues were also effective in stimulating cell division. Fucose, a non-metabolisable analogue of galactose, increased the rate of division by 20-25%.
