Plants synthesize carbohydrates in mature leaves that act as primary carbon sources for biosynthesis, osmotic regulation, and signalling. Sugar transporter gene families regulate carbon partitioning, phloem loading and unloading, and sink uptake, thereby influencing growth, and yield.
