Thalassemia syndromes result from a significant reduction in the synthesis of globin chains (α, β, γ, δ). An imbalance between α- and non-α-globin chains underlies β-thalassemia. α-Globin tetramers accumulate and precipitate in erythroid precursors (ineffective erythropoiesis).
