The differentiation of proplastids into chloroplasts is driven by light and closely linked to the process of chlorophyll biosynthesis. Chloroplasts, while essential for photosynthesis, also generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), necessitating robust antioxidant mechanisms such as superoxide dismutases (SODs).
