Abstract excerpt
Myxococcus xanthus is a bacterium that lives on surfaces as a predatory biofilm called a swarm. As a growing swarm feeds on prey and expands, it displays dynamic multicellular patterns such as traveling waves called ripples and branching protrusions called flares.
