In 2017, the US Food and Drug Administration investigated the sources of multiple outbreaks of salmonellosis. Epidemiologic and traceback investigations identified Maradol papayas as the suspect vehicles. During the investigations, the genomes of 55 Salmonella enterica that were isolated from papaya samples were sequenced.
