Chloroplasts are believed to be descendants of ancestral cyanobacteria that have a peptidoglycan layer between the outer and the inner membranes. In particular, cyanelles having peptidoglycan in Cyanophora paradoxa are considered as evidence for the endosymbiotic origin of chloroplasts.
