BACKGROUND: Paragonimiasis is a foodborne parasitic infection caused by lung flukes of the genus Paragonimus. Several species of Paragonimus are endemic in Japan: P. westermani (diploid and triploid) P. miyazakii, P. ohirai and P. iloktsuenensis.
