A hypervariable deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) probe was isolated by screening a Leishmania donovani genomic DNA library with L. donovani total DNA. The probe was used to characterize L. donovani stocks on the basis of restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs).
