The genetic and phenotypic properties of 10 strains identified as Lactobacillus intestinalis sp. nov. were examined. These strains constitute a distinct species which can be differentiated from all of the previously described homofermentative species in the genus Lactobacillus by their carbohydrate fermentation pattern.
