ABSTRACT The major cause of athlete’s foot is Trichophyton rubrum , a dermatophyte or fungal pathogen of human skin. To facilitate molecular analyses of the dermatophytes, we sequenced T. rubrum and four related species, Trichophyton tonsurans , Trichophyton equinum , Microsporum canis , and Microsporum gypseum .
