Restriction endonuclease analysis (REA), developed 25 years ago for genotyping Mycobacterium bovis strains, is an important tool for bovine tuberculosis control in New Zealand. While REA gives excellent discrimination, it is technically difficult to perform compared to PCR-based typing systems which are faster and simpler to operate.
