To the Editor: Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is a mosquito-borne member of the family Flaviviridae and the genus Flavivirus. JEV is a major cause of viral encephalitis in Asia. Phylogenetic analysis of the envelope (E) gene sequences has shown that JEV strains can be clustered into 5 distinct genotypes (1).
