BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori is the primary cause of gastritis and peptic ulceration in humans. In a minority of patients with upper gastrointestinal symptoms, long tightly coiled spiral bacteria, provisionally named "Helicobacter heilmannii," are observed in gastric biopsies.
