Microsporidian spores were isolated from two squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) that had been bred at an animal-breeding colony in Japan. The spores were identified as Encephalitozoon cuniculi on the basis of nucleotide sequence analysis of the small-subunit (SSU) rRNA gene.
