The early stage of chronic myeloid leukemia is triggered by the tyrosine kinase Bcr-Abl. Imatinib mesylate, a selective inhibitor of Bcr-Abl, has been successful in chronic myeloid leukemia clinical trials, but short-lived remissions are usually observed in blast crisis patients.
