Variation in a 252-nucleotide segment of the cytochrome b gene from 26 gibbons is described. DNA was extracted from hair, amplified, and directly sequenced. These sequences represent seven of the nine nominal species and three of the four hylobatid subgenera. Variation was observed at 55 sites, 42 of which are phylogenetically informative.
