PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pregnancy is a hypercoaguable state. The hypothesis has been developed that many cases of recurrent miscarriage and of later pregnancy complications are caused by a defective maternal haemostatic response leading to thrombosis of the uteroplacental vasculature and subsequent fetal loss.
