Analysis of ITS rDNA of the black yeast Exophiala dermatitidis revealed a close phylogenetic relationship to the meristematic fungus Sarcinomyces phaeomuriformis. As most strains of S. phaeomuriformis have a yeast-like phenotype corresponding to the anamorph genus Exophiala, a new combination in Exophiala is proposed.
