To supplement the earlier identified European family of the highly homologous alpha-galactosidase MEL1-MEL11 genes and the African family of the divergent MEL12-MEL14 genes, a new MEL gene (MEL15) was found in several Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains isolated from maize dough in Ghana.
