OBJECTIVE: Human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) was recently recognized as an emerging tick-borne infection in Europe. The disease is caused by Anaplasma (previously Ehrlichia) phagocytophila. The first confirmed acute human disease caused by A. phagocytophila was reported from Slovenia in 1998.
