We report that diverse species of bacteria encode a type IB DNA topoisomerase that resembles vaccinia virus topoisomerase. Deinococcus radiodurans topoisomerase IB (DraTopIB), an exemplary member of this family, relaxes supercoiled DNA in the absence of a divalent cation or ATP.
