Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) is a rare recessively inherited disorder caused by mutations in the AIRE (autoimmune regulator) gene. APECED is characterized by variable combinations of endocrine autoimmune diseases such as Addison's disease, hypoparathyroidism, and type 1 diabetes.
