Compliance is so critical to prevent resistance that patients who are not highly motivated to continue on a difficult drug therapy should not receive protease inhibitors. Several AIDS drug assistance programs (ADAPs) are requiring proof of previous compliance before prescribing the drugs. If correct dosages are followed, virus mutation can be delayed potentially for years.
