Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes sporadic and epidemic acute viral hepatitis in many developing countries. In Africa, hepatitis E has been documented by virus detection (reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, RT-PCR) in Egypt, Chad, Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
