We describe a highly sensitive assay for quantitation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) DNA in blood, involving PCR amplification, solution hybridization with Tris-(2, 2'-bipyridine)-ruthenium(II) chelate-labeled probes, and measurement by electrochemiluminescence (ECL).
